Tennis at Alex was revived in 2009. It was revived in response to keen learners who made it clear that they desire to learn and compete in tennis and that they have the determination to develop themselves. This passion and determination is what resulted in our current breed of tennis players. With the amateur coaching of Mrs Ramlall, learners soon felt the need to pit their talents against others and confident in their abilities to do so.
In a short period of time, tennis has grown tremendously. In December 2011, four learners – Zama Gumbi, Kamvelihle Mkhize, Thabani Mdlalose and Langa Ndlela, were given the opportunity to represent Umgundgunlovu at the SELGA municipal games in Durban. It was a thrill for them to play against opponents from other districts, many of whom had been indoctrinated into the game since the age of seven.
Interest in tennis grew steadily, with 2012 seeing the introduction of an official tennis coach. Learners expressed a desire to participate in inter-school fixtures, to test their skills. Alex has been part of the Midlands tennis league since 2013.
Participation in the sport grows each year. Tennis amazingly attracts a certain calibre of learner – many of our top academics play the sport.
