School Hymn

Sir Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 was composed for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1901. On the King’s suggestion, lyricist A.C. Benson wrote ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ which was included in the Coronation Ode in 1902.

In the mid 80s Mrs Margie Odell, mother of 4 Alexandrians, wrote these lyrics for the school hymn, set to the melody of this popular patriotic song.

Alexandra High School

We pledge ourselves to you.

May all that we are part of

Be honest, good and true.

Grant us as we travel

These roads and paths of youth,

The guidance of God’s spirit

His ways of love and truth.

The guidance of God’s spirit

His ways of love and truth.

May we look back and treasure

The memories of each day,

The carefree hours of friendship

We spent at work and play.

And may we ever cherish

All things of Good Report

And Alexandra High School

Where these great things were taught.

And Alexandra High School

Where these great things were taught.

Margie Odell, 1986
